Riambel / Surinam

Has a very wide and shallow lagoon that can only be ridden at high tide, but this is quite a unique experience as the water is still fairly shallow. This gives for very smooth conditions and hardly any chop even in the strongest of winds. Make sure to ride there only on the highest tidal levels, as some fields of urchins nearer the reef will make you regret it if you don’t.
The access to the water is no problem at all, the whole beach, which is pretty long and side shore, is public.
Beware of the westerly, or downwind area of this lagoon, here the current gets strong towards the channel in the reef, and has sucked out many unaware bathers.
This bay works well on most east oriented winds and can accept wind shifts better than further down the coast.
Riviere des galets
Is a river mouth and a  little peninsula that has some very good surf conditions when the wind is slack or northerly, and when the wind picks up has two very useable waves for kiting or windsurfing. This is not a spot for slalom or mellow cruising.
The access to these waves is reserved to experts only as the wind can very tricky near the shore and the wave radical on the reef.
The wave of the cemetery at “Riviere des galets” is a real challenge, very fast and unforgiving. These should also only be challenged at high tide.
Across the bay, Ilot Sancho is a regular spot for surf contests and a nice outing for picnics on the island.
The inside of the island offers a neat little wave too when conditions on the outside get too hairy for surfing.
